We often state any sudden increase in temperature can cause problems for some fisheries and this recent jump in temperature has been no exception. With fish preparing to spawn and a cold April/May the immune system of our fish is not in the best shape to fight off the bacterial and parasite activity that has suddenly begun in the recent heat. As the temperature settles and the fish begin to build their immunity there should be fewer casualties. The spring is often a problematic period for fish and fishery managers alike. For many it is also a period of very inconsistent sport with catch rates fluctuating between excellent to very poor in a matter of days.

For those fisheries with access to aerators the time to utilise these to maximum effect is during the evening. They will often not be required until we suffer prolonged hot spells or humid nights. Oxygen levels are typically highest from around midday and begin dropping by 8pm through to 7am. For the highly stocked venues now is the time to invest in that ammonia test kit. A trip to your local garden/aquatic centre and an investment of around £7 is money well spent. It takes less than 20 seconds to test and is an important tool for any fishery.

Most fishery managers now accept that spring (the old closed season) is not the best time for consistent fishing due to the facts previously mentioned. It will change though in a few short weeks and fisheries need to be ready for the expected increase in anglers and their expected increase in catches. The trend for larger carp continues and demand remains high as it appears a growing number of anglers now seek to catch larger fish, with many 'runs' waters popping up stocked with carp from 8lb to 20lb+ being increasingly popular.
